As if it didn’t blow our minds the first time …
For this weeks #TBT, we wanted to take a look back on local Montauk boy, Leif Engstrom’s run for the 2011 Innersection title. Although he came just short of winning the entire competition, with a huge amount of support from worldwide Innersection voters, the east coast surf community and the local voters of the East End and NY, Leif’s section made the final Innersection film, the first year the competition even took place. It was a big deal for a small town kid like Leif, but just went to prove that he is on the caliber of some of the best surfers in the world.
The Innersection competition was a series of surf films made entirely of user submitted edits, that were put together to make a full length film. Surfers collected clips, threw them together and submitted them to the Innersection platform. Then the voting rounds would decide which sections made it through each round and eventually onto the final movie.
The film was produced by the iconic surf journalist, Nathan Myers and legendary surf filmmaker, Taylor Steele, and was sold and distributed throughout the world and surf industry. Leif made the final stage twice throughout his career, as well as an appearance in the Innersection side project Here & Now. Considering Leif’s success and progression over the years, we wanted to take a look back to the first Innersection that Leif made in 2011. It still blows our mind …
From the beaches of Montauk to Surfing’s lime light, take a look at his 2011 section in this week’s #TBT.
