Fotografiska New York Features Golden Age of Hip Hop’s Star Photographer

You might know Ricky Powell as an officially official fourth Beastie, having traveled with Yauch, Diamond and Horowitz since the “Licensed to Ill” days, when Powell famously quit his job selling lemon ices to go on tour with the Beasties when they opened for Run DMC on the “Raising Hell” tour. That’s where the now legendary photographer honed his style (and his access to hip hop royalty), but his intimate environmental portraits have gone on to far outgrow his start as a chronicler of that scene.

Last week in New York he brought it back to the beat with a pop-up exhibition in a storefront organized with Fotografiska New York. The night showcased many of his portraits of legendary figures from the golden age of hip hop and street photography. And while guests enjoyed the live DJ and Powell portraits, Powell patrolled the room with camera in hand.

In a preview of things to come, the Stockholm-based Fotografiska museum partnered with SneakersnStuff to showcase the kind of events it’ll host regularly when its latest global outpost at 281 Park Avenue South opens this winter.
