A couple of weeks ago, as I was putting on my wetsuit one morning to surf Ditch at sunrise, I quickly looked at the outside temperature: 37 degrees. As soon as I saw that low number, I knew it was fine time to pay a visit to my friends in California. While I’m currently planning on making the City of Angels my permanent home base soon, I still find any and every excuse I can to get out there and get some work done + see my friends.
Another reason I found trip to LA around this time very convenient was because Whalebone was doing a popup shop in Venice Beach. What more could I ask for than to combine both my East Coast and West Coast friends in one of my favorite places?! I quickly made arrangements and soon enough, I was waiting in the JetBlue terminal at JFK.
My plan was to adventure around LA in clothes from our winter line and take rad lifestyle shots, which is exactly what we did. My friend Kelsey took the train up from San Diego to help me with the shoot. We basically wanted to show off how we would spend a day in Venice Beach. First stop, of course, was the WB pop-up.
Since I’m used to seeing the good ol’ Whalebone van parked in front of Ben and Jerry’s or the Montauk Sweatshirt Co., it was nice to see it parked on the street beneath a row of palm trees for once. After picking out some clothes, Kelsey and I headed to the beach, which was about a 30 second walk from the pop-up.
We climbed the lifeguard towers, made friends with the Venice locals (oops), and attempted to go in the freezing cold Pacific Ocean, all the while shooting fun lifestyle photos. Oh, and we can’t forget the fact that I dragged Kelsey on a two mile walk on Abbott Kinney finding all of the “cool walls people take selfies in front of”, and you bet, many selfies were taken.
Much fun was had running around in the sun for a bit in October, but with the launch of the NYC issue I was stoked on getting back to the Big Apple to party with my Bone peeps. (Lyndsey told me to say that).
