I purchased a water housing and a used camera body from Volcom staff photographer Tom Carey via Instagram. When I first held the setup, while firing off 10 frames per second in my front yard laughing with joy, I couldn’t help but wonder how many legendary cover shots and two page spreads this particular setup had shot. Were any of those Volcom posters on my wall shot with this housing and camera? Would this camera be like the Jordan’s Lil’ Bow Wow put on in Like Mike, giving me super water photographer powers? Most likely no…
The combination of flat spell, grueling work hours, and a love of beer drinking with my friends left the housing and camera on the shelf collecting dust for two months. This past week I finally put on some fins and dove in the ocean. An hour later, I was hooked. I felt like a little grom playing in the shore break again.
